A realistic docudrama, Children Metal Divers tells the heart-tugging story of children who scavenge for metal scraps in the murky waters of Manila Bay, often risking their lives in the process.
A »cinema verite« style film filled with snapshots of young kids jumping in the ocean to collect junk in the slums of Baceko Philippines. These children, known as the Bakal Boys, frequently get hurt and suffer from skin irritation and they also lose their hearing ability and their lives. The Bakal Boys, 10-year-old Utoy and 13-year-old Bungal, are close friends almost like brothers. Despite other people’s concern, they keep picking up junk in the sea and selling it. One day, after gathering and selling a vast amount of junk, Bungal disappears.
So realistic that it’s a virtual docu-drama, the film achieves a miraculous rapport with its mostly non-professional cast. Jover, previously best known as a screenwriter (for Brillante Mendoza’s »Foster Child«, for example), shares with Mendoza and a handful of other new Filipino directors the ability to film in some of the country’s roughest locations and to get inside the lives of those who live there without patronizing or sentimentalizing them. The current surge in Filipino indie production may yet come to be seen as a watershed in the development of film »realism«. This astounding film illuminates the plight of kids forced to think and behave like adults before their time as few other movies have ever done.

Wie ich finde, mal wieder ein echter Geheimtip. Hoffentlich bekommen wir den Film auch hier irgendwann zu sehen.
